What happens over 1,500 times a year? That’s the number of times the average garage door opens and closes. Just like any other hardworking home appliance, your garage door needs regular maintenance so it will continue to open and close on demand. Review the checklist below to troubleshoot what may be happening with your garage door before you call Gold Label Door. Find out more about our garage door service offerings.

Broken Garage Door Springs –

Your torsion springs might be broken if your garage door is stuck down and won’t open. Since so many homes use the garage as their main point of entry, a broken spring is the most common garage door failure. Using a flashlight, locate the springs above the door. You can usually see if a spring is broken or out of place. Please be extremely careful when dealing with torsion springs. Garage door springs are incredibly powerful and are dangerous for someone attempting a DIY solution. Read more information about broken spring replacement here.

Cables –

Because they are constantly in motion, steel garage door cables can wear out and become frayed. To open and close the doors, the torsion springs wind or unwind the lift cables. If your garage door is not opening or closing properly, check the cables first. This can quickly become a safety hazard if the cables are frayed or broken so avoid moving the door. The professionals at Gold Label Door know how to diagnose the issue and can replace the cables for you.

Balance –

Did you know that your garage door needs to be balanced? If you can easily lift the door by hand, then it is in balance. The weight of the door and the torsion spring should always be in sync. The springs actually lift the door – the overhead opener does not. If they’re not balanced, the door cannot easily move and the springs needs to be adjusted or repaired. Since the springs are so dangerous to handle, the professionals at Gold Label Door are the only ones who should be balancing the door and springs.

Hinges –

Although they are strong, the steel hinges on your garage door can still wear out. It’s easy to check. Locate the hinges on the frame and confirm that each one is screwed in tightly and aligned with the door. Hinges should be replaced if they become worn out or damaged. A silicon-based lubricant can be used to lubricate your garage door hinges periodically. WD-40 is a solvent-based lubricant, and should never be used since it will degrade the hardware over time. Contact Gold Label Door if you’d like to schedule hinge maintenance with one of our technicians. We’d be happy to check the other components of your garage door while we’re at it!

Rollers & Bearings-

When your garage door opens and closes, does it make a lot of noise? If so, that might mean that the rollers are wearing out. Check to see if the rollers wobble or move when the door moves. If they do this means the bearings inside the roller could be either broken or even altogether missing. To replace your rollers or bearings and to have your door operate quietly, consider replacing the steel rollers with smooth and durable nylon. If you think your rollers may need to be replaced, give Gold Label Door a call.

Motors –

Garage door motors (or operators) come in many varieties and technology options. With so many different models and manufacturers, there is usually not a one-size-fits-all DIY solution. Our team of professional technicians knows the in’s and out’s of all varieties of motors so contact us today to schedule a maintenance call.
